Hawks v. Rockets

We went to watch the Atlanta Hawks play the Houston Rockets last night at the CNN Center downtown and had a blast! It was quite a game--very close and then we pulled ahead in the fourth quarter. However, the Rockets were close behind and everyone was on their feet when we were tied with 5 seconds left on the clock. We watched in anticipation as the winning hoop was scored at the last moment. It was AWESOME!!!!

Somewhere around the beginning of the fourth quarter, I look to my right and see Kat Williams with three or four dudes walking around the section next to us, trying to get to his seats. People pulled out their phones and some brave ones asked for photos with him. We love ATL! It seems like whenever we are downtown we see someone famous! (We saw Ludacris shooting a video in Atlantic station while we were on our way to Ikea a few months ago).

Hot dogs and fries....what diet?

Me: Mayo, ketchup and red onions
Sonny: Mayo and mustard

These guys were called the A-Team dancers and they were hilarious. They were a motley group of guys doing a boy-band routine and at one point they all took off their shirts!!! (Some should've kept theirs on)

These were 6 and 7 year olds during half time playing each other. They were amazing! They made baskets at regulation level effortlessly. (Sorry, these pictures were taken with my phone, so they are far away)

Woohoo! GoOOOOOO HAWKS!

Update

Wow, its been a long time since I've posted anything on this blog! We have been very busy lately. Here are a few updates:

*Sonny started medical school and is now four months in. He starts his anatomy module and cadaver dissection on Tuesday!!! He has a ton of studying to do before he cuts, so he is buckling down and getting prepared.
(Sharyl is a little queasy about it, but apparently Sonny is psyched!)

*Sharyl is still working in Marketing and Business Development, having completed a year at the Company in October!! Now, she has started a Real Estate course to get ready for the licensing exam.

*Sonny is doing his "OPEX" with an internal medicine physician who was very impressed about the extent of Sonny's knowledge on his first day (he was able to diagnose a few issues based on a cursory examination!). (An OPEX is like a type of clinical rotation where he goes once a week for a year).

*Juno is fatter than ever, and is now topping speeds of 60mph at the dog park. She likes to show off in front of the other dogs and spends most of her time running laps around them or chasing the incessant amount of tennis balls thrown by Sharyl or Sonny. She has this fun habit of flapping her ears early in the morning because she feels it is her responsibility to make sure we are out of bed on time. Also, she has been working diligently to keep the legions of squirrels in the front and back yard at bay--she believes they have secret plans for an all-out siege on the house. (I'll keep you posted as more developments from the front lines arise).

Our house/in the middle of our street/our house...

So our little casita is coming along!!! We are having our contractor remodel the kitchen and finish the hall bathroom after Sonny's awesome demo work. Sharyl enjoyed watching him swing that sledgehammer around...oooooh... um, ahem, anyway...where was I? Oh yeah, the house. So the addition to our bedroom is almost done and by next week we should have a new closet and PIMP master bath. I'm getting an island in the kitchen with new granite countertops (and AWESOME green walls, I'll post pictures soon).
It will all be complete just in time for Sonny's first week of med school. (YAY!!)

Sonny and I competed in the Callaway Gardens Sprint Triathlon over Father's Day weekend. Sonny beat me by 4 minutes with a time of 1:11:13 and we both had a blast! We got to do it with most of his family including his two brothers, our sisters in law, mom, stepdad, a nephew and a niece. Also some people from our company participated so it was fun to see everyone come across the finish line! We are training for the Tri2Remember in September that will benefit the Alzheimer's Fund. Its a little more intense than the Callaway Gardens and Turtle Crawl since its a 15 mile hilly bike ride along with a 5k run and a 600m swim. However, Sonny is a strong biker and we are training together so we can get strong and faster.

Mi casa es su casa

Guess What???? We closed on our house today!!! We officially own our first house. We paid 20k less than its worth and paid NOTHING (ok, $10.00) in closing costs besides our 3.5% down payment. We are both so happy about it! Now comes the fun part: choosing paint colors, decorating, buying furniture and appliances, etc. YAY! AND we still have money to save for rainy days (or preggo days) when money might be tight.

Letdown/Blessing

Yesterday morning, Sonny and I woke up with a feeling that we needed to go by our "new" house to check it out. There was a drainage issue with the basement when we had all that snow, and I was wondering if there was mold in the basement. So we drove down there. We walked into the house and heard dripping water: the breakfast nook had a waterfall coming down just to the right of the light fixture. I ran downstairs, praying that my suspicions were unfounded. Luckily I was wearing my galoshes. There was about an inch and a half of standing water in the basement. I wanted to cry. The small drainage issue that we thought could be corrected in a Saturday afternoon was clearly more severe than we anticipated. Mold had started to form on the studs and the insulation and stucco was wet by the side entrance. Unless they come down 40k on the house so that we can fix it, we are walking away.
I am so disappointed, since I was a few weeks away from painting, decorating and accessorizing my first home. However, we both agree that this was a blessing because we found out before it was too late. Everything has been stopped--the mortgage, the appraisal--everything. We are back to square one. However, hopefully now we can find the perfect little house.
We are just praying hard to find the right place now with the little scrap of time we have left.

Emory

Sonny had his interview at Emory and was also fortunate to meet with the head of the Multicultural Student Affairs office. His meeting with the director went well and he felt that he shone in his interviews. We have been praying hard that he is accepted to Emory because it is his dream school and it would be very convenient to live by Atlanta instead of Macon. Please pray with us!! The admissions committee meeting met today...I hope they felt inspired.

Sharyl is training for the Turtle Crawl Triathlon and trying to build up her running stamina.

Juno is as happy as a clam, growing tall and muscular. She loves chasing us around when we are on the bikes. She picks on Harley often and is getting better at learning new tricks. (She now knows "shake", "BANG!! You're dead!!" and she is learning to hold a treat on her nose until we say "OK" and then she can eat it. She is a master at sit, stay, and down).
